A life spent close to history, service and story.
Daniel Shepherd was born in Blackwood, near Adelaide, in 1974 and grew up in Sydney. At sixteen he moved with his parents to England, beginning fifteen years that would deepen his connection to the country’s medieval past.
His mother, Margaret, was born in England and helped form his early love of its history. Daniel later cycled through the English countryside, seeking out places tied to Anglo-Saxon events—from York and Leicester to Leek.
During his years in Britain he served in the Territorial Army, the modern descendant of the fyrd. After returning to Australia in the early 2000s, he spent more than eight years in the full-time Army as a medic.
With his military career complete, Daniel returned to medieval history in his forties. The Hereward saga brings together that fascination, his experience of service and a determination to make the human world of Anglo-Saxon England feel immediate.
